International Driving Permit (IDP)
Driving through multiple countries requires an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is an identity document that allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle in any country that recognizes IDPs. To be valid, the IDP must be accompanied by a valid driving license.
The IDP, which is slightly larger than a passport, is a multi-language translation of the driver's license from the issuing nation, complete with photograph and vital statistics. Oftentimes, short term visitors do not need an IDP since their driving license suffices.
Once you've got your International Driving Permit you will usually be able to drive in most countries overseas, one just need to make sure TO carry full UK or any respective countries’ driving license together.
It's required or recommended in over 140 countries – including the USA, Brazil and Hong Kong. In some countries its a legal requirement to enable you to drive, while in other countries it may be a compulsory requirement by car hire companies.
